FAQ's FAQ's
Why does water run behind my eaves trough?
The lower edge of the roof should extend beyond the fascia board 3/4 inch so that runoff drains into the eaves trough. If this slight overhang is too short, water will drip behind the eaves trough, leading to rotten roof sheathing and fascia.
To avoid this proplem a sheet metal drip edge should be installed at all eaves to guide water into the eaves trough.
Does my roof need vents?
Attic ventilation is a very important part of roofing. Proper attic ventialtion extends the life of the roof and reduces proplems because it minimizes the temperature differential between the attic and the air outside. Proper ventilation will remove moisture and heat from the attic. Trapped heat and moisture can raise energy costs, cause ice dams and damage roof system components.
Improper roof ventilation will significantly reduce the life of your roof, causing the shingles to curl from the extreme heat after just a few short years. It can also cause the roof deck to deteriorate, warp and become spongy and dangerous to walk on. This occurs because one side of the plywood decking needs to be able to "breathe" by being exposed to circulating air. The adhesives used in the plywood can deteriorate or dry rot can occur because of condensation. There is also the problem of mould and mildue which is both damaging and can cause serious health problems.
To properly ventilate an attic, two types of vents are needed. Intake vents, which are located at the eaves and allow fresh air into the attic; and exhaust vents, which are located near or on the ridge line of the roof and allow air to leave the attic.
Why is it important to ask the contractor for proof of liability & fire insurance and WCB coverage?
It is one of the most important questions to ask your contractor.
If the contractor does not carry WCB coverage, you (the homeowner) may be held responible in the case of an accident on the job. Go to WorkSafeBC's website to get a clearance certificate for any contracting business to ensure that they are in good standing and have up to date WCB coverage.
Fire and liability insurance is also very important. It ensures that in case of a fire the Contractor's insurance will cover the damage. Liability insurance covers any possible damages that may occur to you, your home or your property during the job duration.
Does my roof need underlayment?
Yes! Underlayment is just as important as the roof itself.
Ice & Water Shield should be used at all eaves, around brick chimneys, skylights and in valleys to provide an "invisible" protection against leaks.
It helps prevent water leakage due to ice dams and wind driven rain. The tear resistant membrane consists of a tough non-woven glass fibre mat which has been impregnated and coated with specially formaulated modified bitumen.
The remaining surface of the roof must be covered in felt , which is especially important on slopes below 6:12, due to ice & snow build up.
I have seen some roofs where the valleys are metal and others have shingled valleys. What is the difference?
Though it is rarely found in the cariboo, metal valleys are actually recommended for best roof performance by Shingle manufacturers. If the valleys are constructed of shingles, the shingles in the valleys are NOT covered by the manufacturer's warranty. You can find more info on IKO's warranty at www.iko.com
Most of the rain water as well as ice build up will be in the valleys, this means that the valleys will have the most wear and tear of the entire roof surface and are usually the first place the roof will fail.
Using shingles in valleys will decrease the life of your roof significantly. Metal valleys will ensure a long life to your new roof.
